What is the teeth whitening process?
-
Teeth can become stained from food and drink, such as coffee, tea, or dark sodas. Also, as we get older our teeth enamel thins, allowing the dentin, which is naturally a yellow color, to show through the enamel. To whiten your teeth a whitening gel is applied to the teeth and an LED light activates the gel. The gel lightens stains that are on the outside of the enamel and also lightens the dentin inside the teeth, giving you beautiful white teeth.
How white can you get my teeth?
-
The amount of lightening depends on your teeth and the type of discoloration you have. Yellow discoloration lightens better because that is usually caused by food, drink, or aging. Gray discoloration, which can be caused by medication, damage, or disease is more difficult to lighten.
How long will the new shade last?
-
Some companies guarantee your new color will last 6 months or a year but it really all depends on you. If you eat or drink foods that can stain the teeth like coffee, tea, dark sodas, blueberries, red wine, etc. your teeth will become stained again more easily. Avoiding those foods will keep your teeth lighter longer. Most of us enjoy eating those foods so an occasional whitening touch-up will keep your teeth the shade you want.
Can I whiten my teeth if I have fillings or crowns?
-
Crowns and fillings can whiten only to their orginal color. If you had a teeth whitening session before getting your crown or filling, great!. If not, we’ll watch the color as the session progresses to make sure your teeth and dental work are as close as possible to the same color.
Will whitening my teeth cause them to be sensitive?
-
Occasionally teeth or gums can become sensitive during or after the session. That is why we take precautions before and after the whitening gel is applied to your teeth to reduce any sentitivity that may occur.
